The Cherokee Chapter
is involved in many different activities. We:
Participate in Revolutionary War Battle Observances
One of the primary objectives of the SAR is to bring attention to the
many Revolutionary War battles and the significance each one played in
the struggle for Independence. Although we think of other colonies as
playing a more prominent military role, the SAR documents
159 battles or
skirmishes fought in Georgia between May of 1775 and December of 1782.
Four of the more memorable Georgia events are:
Provide a Color Guard for Patriotic Events
Not only does the Cherokee Chapter Color Guard participate in parades
or post colors at public functions, we contribute to a wide variety of
historic, educational, and patriotic events. Participation of the color
guard can enhance virtually every SAR activity.
Membership in the Color Guard is open to all Cherokee Chapter members with an official Continental and/or Militia Uniform. The cost of a uniform is comparable to a business suit and is the responsibility of each Color Guardsman. The Cherokee Chapter provides the flags needed for presentation and posting of colors. Although not necessary, additional accoutrements, such as muskets, canteens, swords, sashes, gorgets, etc. are also the responsibility of the individual Color Guardsman wishing to have these accessories. For consistency, the Continental Uniform used by the Cherokee Chapter follows the specific requirements chosen by the Georgia Society. The Georgia Society uses a uniform that is representative of the North Atlantic Regiments (New York and New Jersey) during the American Revolution. It was also a design worn by George Washington’s personal guard.
The Order Form for the Georgia Society Continental is on the Georgia Society website. You may find the hat worn with the Continental Uniform on the internet at Jas Townsend & Son, Inc. The catalog number for the hat is TH-905. A Militia uniform allows for a more individualistic presentation and may consist of most any revolutionary period attire. There are many different sources for militia uniforms. Individual guardsmen who make a significant contribution for three or more years are eligible for color guard service medals. If you have any questions about the Cherokee Chapter Color Guard, contact our Color Guard Commander.
Recognize Patriotic Displays of the American Flag
The First Amendment to the Constitution protects the freedom of
speech not only for those who may wish to express censure but also for
those who wish to show praise. There are many Americans that express
their freedom of speech and their support for the United States every
day through the display of the American Flag. However, there is a proper
protocol that demonstrates respect for our heritage, customs, and
values. The Cherokee Chapter wants to recognize individuals and
institutions that properly display the American Flag with a Flag
Certificate to say “Thank you for being a loyal patriotic citizen.”
